Arch-SoHo
Georgia Tech Student Center
Project Name: Georgia Tech Campus Center
Year: 2016
Client: Georgia Institute of Technology
Employer: Workshop Architects
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Keywords: Anxiety, Distributed Building, Refuge
Challenge: Renovating, and potentially expanding, Georgia Tech's campus center.
Solution: The pre-design began with a question: how does stress move through your day? Students drew graphs. Some spiked and stayed high—stress building with no relief. Others dipped and climbed, revealing moments of calm. Those dips led us to spaces of refuge: stairwells, dorm room kitchens, library nooks, rooftops. In workshops, students asked for more of those moments, woven into daily life. The result wasn’t just a student center renovation—it became a distributed building hosting distributed wellbeing. Renovations, additions, pavilions, and outdoor links created spaces to pause, make, or breathe. Wellbeing is now ambient, accessible, and shared.

Type 1: Sustained or escalating stress with no recovery
Type 2: Rhythmic stress with built-in recovery
